Farms at Work June Newsletter

With spring turning into summer June brings Local Food Week (June 5-11), World Agriculture Day (June 11), and many other exciting opportunities to connect with food and farming in East Central Ontario.

Chef Jeff Curtis from Elmhirst's Resort is connecting through food! According to Curtis, "this time of year two ingredients come to mind immediately, I'm looking at them in my garden right now. The first is rhubarb, some of the best Ontario desserts feature rhubarb, like rhubarb crisp or puddings, and as a fixture in berry pies later in the year. The next is chive flowers. Plates served at this exact time of year get to have one of the most beautiful and fragrant garnishes, the slender delicate chive and beautiful purple chive flower. The flowers have a very light garlic aroma and a floral sweetness that is so great and only exists right at this time".

How are you connecting to food and farming in June?

Great Canadian Giving Challenge

Farms at Work is participating in the Great Canadian Giving Challenge! Throughout the month of June, every dollar you donate will automatically enter us for a chance to win $20,000!

Farms at Work has been sounding the alarm on the future of farming within East Central Ontario. Aging farmers, development pressures, barriers to new farmer entry, and climate change are just a few of the challenges facing farmers (and consumers). The good news? We are working toward solutions and we want you to be part of them.
